Humidity Levels affect Your Comfort

Indoor air humidity levels will affect your comfort considerably. Relative humidity is a scientific measure of the water vapour concentration in the air. It impacts directly on our thermal comfort and how we feel air temperature. We can tolerate significantly higher air temperature when the air around us is dry and we quickly feel too warm and sweaty if the air temperature rises above 25 °C, for example, in a humid environment.

The psychrometric chart above shows the relation between air humidity and temperature and indicates the typical human comfort zone (green area) – ideally our indoor environment should be conditioned to keep air humidity within 40%-60% and temperature within 22-27 °C. Source: University of Ohio

In addition, controlling air humidity plays a key role in achieving good IAQ. Excessive humidity levels lead to dampness when condensation occurs on cold, poorly insulated surfaces (windows, walls, etc.), creating a good breeding medium for bacteria, mites, mould, etc.
